Holy smokes, that is one massive bag! That's why they call it the Jumbo Jammer, baby! Like its smaller sibling, the Jumbo Jammer is a high-volume, rackless universal handlebar/saddle bag that will carry anything you might need for all-day rides or making your rounds about town. It can also function seamlessly as a component of your touring or bikepacking outfit. While the Jammer doesn't require a rack, it can benefit from the support and extra security in certain setups. No rules! Mount it how you want and make it your own!
Road Runner offers the Jammer in three sizes: the standard Jammer Bag, the Middle Earth and the Jumbo Jammer. The Middle Earth is identical to the Jumbo Jammer in depth and height but is 2" narrower, allowing attachment to a wider range of handlebars. The Jumbo or Middle Earth could easily be the main component of your bikepacking setup with plenty of space for gear.
The Jumbo Jammer maxes out at approximately 29 liters (yes, you read that correctly) and features an internal stiffener to provide additional structure for larger loads. The rolltop closure and unique 4-point strapping system also allow secure compression of loads more than half that volume. The strapping system is especially secure when the closure straps are looped over the handlebar. See the setup video below for the method and don't be scared off by Rat's dance moves.
While we'd say the Jumbo Jammer is best carried from the handlebars, it can be mounted as a saddlebag (recommended for road use only) if your saddle has the traditional bag attachment loops. The Jumbo Jammer's outer shell is construction from durable, abrasion resistant Cordura. The floating, seam-taped nylon liner provides reliable waterproofing and the light gray interior color makes it easy to identify the contents. The Jumbo Jammer also comes equipped with additional strapping and compression straps that connects over the top of the bag between the front d-rings and the handlebars for added security and stability with larger or heavier loads.
Fit Notes
This is a seriously massive bag and is not compatible with all handlebars! Consider your handlebar choice carefully before ordering this bag. We've found the Jumbo Jammer works best on wide, MTB-style flat/riser bars (like Surly's Cheater Bar or Sunrise Bar). For drop bars, you'll definitely want a bar with a wide center section and maybe some flare in the drops (like Salsa's 46 or 48cm Cowchipper or the 48cm Nitto Noodle) for the best range of hand positions and to prevent interference with brake/shift levers. Generally speaking, the Jumbo is not ideal on many curvy, multi-position handlebars such as Jones Bars, moustache bars, etc. Three strap placement options (approx. 4.5, 8 or 12" apart) allow for attachment to a wide variety of handlebar shapes.
When installing the bag, take care that your control cables/hoses will not bind or kink throughout the handlebar's range of motion. Longer cables/hoses may need to be installed in some applications. This bag is not compatible with centerpull or cantilever front brakes with an exposed inner cable along the headtube. As the Jammer is usually attached to your handlebars and either the head tube or fork crown, the angle of the bag will vary with your cockpit arrangement. Bikes with longer stems and steeper head tube angles will wind up with the bag facing more forward than up.
