Product Overview
When it was introduced back in 2017, Surly's Pack Rat didn't exactly set the bike world on fire. Folks couldn't quite figure it out. Is it just a Cross-Check with a front rack? It's a rando bike but not, really? Rim brakes and quick release in the age of disc and thru-axle? However, those who had the chance to actually RIDE a Pack Rat really enjoyed it. There's more going on here than the simple frame would belie. Here's a link to Surly's blog if you want some insights into their ideas for the bike.
It's a quick, snappy ride that likes to go fast, corner hard and carry some stuff at the same time. No, it isn't a heavy-hauling touring bike but it's a helluva lot more responsive and fun to ride than a Long Haul Trucker or Disc Trucker. The frame is pretty light and flexible, so heavy loads on a rear rack aren't ideal. However, you can really load up the front with a platform rack, handlebar bag and/or lowrider panniers and carry plenty of gear without compromising handling and ride quality. Balance the load with a light rear rack or seat bag and you're set.
The Pack Rat is a great bike to get you around town, out on adventurous day rides or on overnight/multiday trips over all kinds of roads. Build it up how you like and get out there!
This frameset is the last of the Pack Rats that we'll ever see, so this is your final chance to get hold of one. It's an ideal parts bin bike and can be built up with components of any vintage. Need help with a build? Just call or email the shop and we'll be happy to help.
