We will not ship new Surly bikes. They must be picked up in our Boise, ID. store.
All new for 2017 the Karate Monkey has had a complete makeover. The geared Karate Monkey now arrives stock with one by eleven gearing; a 30 tooth chain ring drives 11 cogs spaced from 11 to 42 teeth. But the most exciting thing about this bike is the wheels. The 27.5 X 3" or 27.5+ tires (same bead seat diameter as 650b) are right in the sweet spot of traction, cushion, and grip for any unpaved riding. The front dropout uses a 15mm through-axle hub with 110mm "Boost" spacing. The "Gnot-Boost" (145mm spaced) rear dropouts will fit a hub with Boost spacing of 148mm or standard through-axle spacing of 142mm. Washers and spacers are provided to make a standard 135mm quick release set up work too. Check out the video for an explanation of the complex mathematics behind "Gnot-Boost" spacing. Way to go Surly Enginerds! By the way, 29er wheels and tires (up to 2.55") will fit too. Surly also offers the same frame in a single-speed 29er build.
The frame tubing is trumpet shaped at the head tube for strength. The 44mm head tube accepts straight or tapered steerer tubes, making it easy to add a suspension fork. The bike also features a 30.9mm seat post and cable routing for dropper post compatibility. The geometry is "progressive" and "trail oriented" which means the chainstays are short, the top tube is long and the head tube angle is relatively slack. These tweaks add up to a bike with a great blend of climbing traction, downhill stability and agile handling. Basically, this bike likes to party on the singletrack!
In classic Surly style, this bike has versatility in its blood and is capable of much more than just day rides. The frame features a full compliment of braze-ons for front and rear racks, triple-pack bosses on the fork legs and downtube for Anything/Many Things cages or standard bottle cages. This is your dream rig for singletrack shredding, loaded backcountry adventures and everything in between. Load it up and get out there!
