The Cross Check is one of the Bike Hermits Favorites, in fact his daily tool around town bike is Norm, his trusty Surly Cross Check. For years, Norm was a single speed but as he has aged he moved to a two speed mode and is qutie content for now.
Why a cross check?
You can ride it on the road or off. It’s got lots of space for fat tires and for fenders. It does as good a job getting you across the country as it does getting you across town. If you get bored with how it’s built, change it. It can be a geared bike, or a single speed or fixed gear. Tires up to 700x45 (29x1.75) fit fine, or run skinny tires, if you must.
The frame spec hasn't changed since the Cross Check was introduced. The fork has been updated with a new fork crown and eyelets for mounting racks or lights. The semi-horizontal dropouts make it easy to tension the chain if using the bike as a single speed.
2x10 gearing on the stock bike with a 36/48 tooth double chain ring and 11-32 10 speed cassette. Tektro linear pull brakes provide the stopping power.
